Walking with Moms in Need

On Mother’s Day of last year, our parish announced a commitment to participate in the year long process of implementing “Walking With Moms In Need, launched by the USCCB.

Our parish Core Team continues to work the process and projects to complete through Phase 4 by the end of May.  Phase 5 will be ongoing as a parish ministry.

Through the 5 Phase process, parishes are asked to complete an inventory of the resources currently available in their local community, assess the results and identify gaps, and plan and implement a parish response based on their findings.

  • Phase 1: Introduce Walking with Moms and Begin building a Core Team
  • Phase 2: Launch Parish Inventory Process
  • Phase 3: Share Inventory Results and Begin Assessment and Planning
  • Phase 4: Announce and Commit to Parish Response
  • Phase 5: Celebrate and Implement Parish Plans

Walking with Moms in Need is a nationwide initiative to increase support for pregnant and parenting mothers facing difficulties. As part of Walking with Moms in Need, parishes—with the support of their bishop and pastor—are invited to take part in a yearlong process to evaluate local resources and support for mothers in need. Each participating parish is asked to complete a simple inventory of the resources currently available in their local area, assess the results and identify gaps, and plan and implement a parish response based on their findings.

Our parish Walking With Moms in Need team has been busy collecting and vetting area resources for moms in crisis. This Fall, we began to share and highlight area resources.  Our goal is to be sure that all parishioners are informed and know where to refer a mom in crisis. The collection, compiling, and vetting of resources will continue over the next few months. We are working with both private and public resources available to help moms in crisis. Once vetted and approved, local area resources will be added to those in the “Moms in Need Crisis Resource Guide” provided by the Diocese of Duluth.  Resource guides and prayer cards are located at both church entrances.

Our Blessed Sacrament team has recognized New Beginnings pregnancy + family support located in Grand Rapids, MN as an important resource for moms in need of an ultra sound.  They offer limited obstetrical ultrasound to determine the viability of pregnancy. New Beginnings is looking for a Registered Diagnostic Medical Sonographer (RDMS) with an OB/GYN credential to provide annual training and supervision to their staff providing limited obstetric ultrasounds. Start Walking with Moms in Need TODAY!

If a woman with an unexpected or challenging pregnancy turned to you, would you know what help is available? Could a mom struggling to care for her young kids turn to your neighborhood Catholic church and find local assistance?

Through Walking with Moms in Need, Catholics can help vulnerable women find support in welcoming and caring for their children.

Our parish is still in the process of implementing Walking with Moms in Need and has already made a difference in our community.

What is it:

What is it? Walking with Moms in Need offers a simple process for Catholics and their parishes to:

* Find out what help is available to local women who are pregnant or parenting in difficult circumstances;

* Identify what types of support are missing;

* Determine how their church can be part of strengthening the local support network for moms in need.

Everyone should know how to help moms in difficult circumstances.
