WHAT IS THE BLESSING OF FOOD ON HOLY SATURDAY? Blessing of the Easter food baskets on Holy Saturday or on Easter morning is a tradition among Roman Catholic and Orthodox Christian Central and Eastern Europeans. This tradition was brought to the United States by immigrants from Europe. I grew up having “Blessed Breakfast” after Mass on Easter Sunday. For us, this consisted of 7 things: Ham, sausage, round sweet bread, horseradish root, hard cooked eggs, potica and wine. This tradition came from my dad’s family passed down to us and now to our children. We knew there was meaning behind what was in the basket but we were not certain what everything meant so in 2004 I decided to find out. The information I am sharing here is from other families in our parish who share this tradition, online sources, and information from a book created for the Catholic church in Ely many years ago explaining Zegen (Slovenian Easter Custom). The foods and meanings mentioned in that book are all in bold lettering followed by meanings found elsewhere. I then list those foods and meanings mentioned in other sources as well. What was actually in each basket largely depended on your family heritage. As written in the book of blessings: The custom of blessing food for Easter arose from the discipline of fasting throughout Lent and the special Easter fast during the Easter Triduum. Easter was the first day when meat, eggs, and other foods could again be eaten. Although not of obligation, the special fast during the Triduum may still be observed as well as the tradition of blessing food for the first meal of Easter. According to custom, food may be blessed before or after the Easter vigil on Holy Saturday or on Easter morning for consumption at the first meal of Easter, when fasting is ended and the church is filled with joy. MEAT (ham, pork, beef – whatever is preferred) depicts the body of Jesus. Ham is symbolic of great joy and abundance in celebration of Christ’s resurrection. Some households prefer veal or lamb, which reminds Christians that the risen Christ is the Lamb of God. SAUSAGE depicts the ropes that bound Jesus as he was taken from Golgatha. Sausage, either fresh or smoked, are symbolic of the chains of death that were broken when Jesus rose from the dead, as well as God’s favor and generosity. BREAD baked in a round or circular shape means the crown of thorns. A round loaf of sweetened yeast bread or cake studded with orange and lemon peel and raisins reminds us of Jesus, the risen Lord, who is the Eucharistic food of our earthly journey and the true bread of everlasting life. Our tradition is to make round sweet bread with a depression in the middle to symbolizes Jesus’ wounds. HORSERADISH ROOT represents the nails used to fasten Christ to the cross. Horseradish, especially mixed with grated beets, is symbolic of Christ's passion and the blood he shed. HARD COOKED EGGS colored red represent the drops of Jesus’ blood; if not colored (white) can represent the Tomb from which Jesus resurrected. Colored and uncolored hard cooked eggs are symbols of Easter, life, and prosperity and Christ's Resurrection from the tomb. They indicate hope. ORANGE is the sponge that was offered to Jesus with a bitter drink. POTICA: in some areas the family’s favorite bread such as “potica” or “Vrtenica” (Prekrumje), is also put into the basket. Potica represents the crown of thorns that was placed on Jesus’ head. BACON is a symbol of the overabundance of God's mercy and generosity. BUTTER is symbolic of the goodness of Christ that we should emulate toward others. It can be shaped into a fancy lamb mold or simply packed into a glass container with cloves arranged into a cross on the top. BUTTER AND DAIRY are included to celebrate the end of Lent and the richness of our salvation which flows from the death and resurrection of Jesus. CHEESE is symbolic of the moderation Christians should have at all times. Usually, fresh dry curd or farmer's cheese (not aged) is placed in the basket, but another type of cheese might be included. SALT, a necessary element in physical life, is symbolic of prosperity and justice and is included in the basket to remind us that people are the flavor of the earth. Or, SALT symbolizes wisdom and preservation from corruption, and reminds us that Jesus did not undergo corruption from the grave. My grandma always had a salt shaker on her table labeled “Holy Salt.” SWEETS suggest the promise of eternal life or good things to come WINE is the drink of the last supper. It’s sparkle reminds us of the glory of Easter. CANDLE is included to symbolize Jesus the life and the “light of the World” Once the BASKET, which represents the Sepulcher or tomb of Jesus, is filled it is covered with a DECORATIVE CLOTH that represents the shroud of Christ. It's usually made of linen or other fine cloth and is embroidered with religious symbols related to the Resurrection and the celebration of Easter. These basket covers are passed down from generation to generation. None of this food is touched until after church services on Easter Sunday. Many parishes still participate in this custom of the blessing of the Easter food or baskets. As we celebrate the Easter feast of new life, we bless the food, which sustains our physical life and our whole being. Please join us at Blessed Sacrament to have your basket blessed! Dona Seeba

Blessing of the Food/Easter Baskets
Wednesday Apr 13, 2022 6:00 PM to 7:00 PM
WHAT IS THE BLESSING OF FOOD ON HOLY SATURDAY?
Blessing of the Easter food baskets on Holy Saturday or on Easter morning is a tradition among Roman Catholic and Orthodox Christian Central and Eastern Europeans. This tradition was brought to the United States by immigrants from Europe.
I grew up having “Blessed Breakfast” after Mass on Easter Sunday. For us, this consisted of 7 things:
Ham, sausage, round sweet bread, horseradish root, hard cooked eggs, potica and wine.
As written in the book of blessings:
The custom of blessing food for Easter arose from the discipline of fasting throughout Lent and the special Easter fast during the Easter Triduum.
My grandma always had a salt shaker on her table labeled “Holy Salt.”
SWEETS suggest the promise of eternal life or good things to come
WINE is the drink of the last supper. It’s sparkle reminds us of the glory of Easter.
CANDLE is included to symbolize Jesus the life and the “light of the World”
Once the BASKET, which represents the Sepulcher or tomb of Jesus, is filled it is covered with a DECORATIVE CLOTH that represents the shroud of Christ.
